Ian Smith - Director of Music
Ian Smith is one of the leading and most sought after conductors in the Bedford and Milton Keynes areas. Educated at York University and Queens' College, Cambridge, Ian moved to Milton Keynes in 1975 (Bedford in 1981) where he became involved with many musical activities both as a violinist and a conductor. Ian is Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Bedford Choral Society as well as the Danesborough Chorus
Recent performances have included the Verdi Requiem , the Campara Requiem , Bach's Magnificat , Dvorak's Mass in D and the Kodaly Missa Brevis . Concerts planned for 2005 include Rachmaninov Vespers , Vaughn Williams Sea Symphony and Towards the Unknown Region .
Ian is also conductor of the Bedfordshire County Youth Orchestra with whom he has given frequent performances at the Edinburgh Festival. His wide-ranging career also includes many radio recordings together with television appearances for both BBS and ITV.
This breadth of musical experience and his enthusiasm has resulted in Ian being invited to conduct a number of other orchestras including the Milton Keynes City Orchestra and Bedfordshire Symphony Orchestra. As a violinist, he is also leader of the Beverley String Quartet.
Formerly Head of the County Youth Music and Arts Service for Bedfordshire, Ian is now Director of Music and Head of Expressive Arts at Wooton Upper School. He is also on the board of The Stables, Wavendon, and continues to be actively involved in practical music-making throughout the county.
