We start off the new year by performing the great Bach masterpiece St. John Passion, with its many beautiful arias, accompanied by orchestral writing of unfailing originality. This inspirational work, pervaded by a quality of tenderness, combines music of appropriate gravitaswith uplifting choruses and hymn-like chorales.
We are very glad to welcome back tenor Alexander Sprague, on this occasion, to sing the role of Evangelist, while newcomer Callum Thorpe sings Christus. They are joined by a group of equally promising young singers: soprano, Frederique Klooster; alto, Lucie Spickova; tenor, Andrew Dickinson and baritone, Jonathan McGovern.
The Choral Society's performance is with Bedford Sinfonia and will be directed by our principal guest conductor, Michael Rose.
